LEVADA DOS MAROÇOS HALF DAY

The Levada dos Maroços is a easy but really beautiful “Madeira Levada walk”, this “levada” takes place in the valley of the city of Machico that is the second largest town in Madeira Island and is located east of the Capital Funchal. Machico was the first city to be discovered in 1419 by the portuguese navigators Tristão Vaz Teixeira and João Gonçalves Zarco. The side valleys of the “Ribeira de Machico” are particularly lovely in the spring when the Acacia is flowering. Along the “levada” walk you will have the opportunity to observe the only irrigation channel (levada walk) in the dry north-east of Madeira Island. Discover the stunning views over the bay of Machico and observe the famous “Poios Madeirenses” (agricultural terraces). You may be lucky enough to taste some of the fresh fruit that some farmers sell along the Levada walk. The forest in this walk is an exotic forest introduced by the people from Madeira and composed by Acacias and some Pines trees.

The location of Madeira, the climate and the mountainous relief allow an enormous assortment of crops to be cultivated, in this agriculture areas grow a lot of tropical fruits and also some vegetables. People from Madeira island really need the irrigation channels called “levadas” in order to bring the water from the north of the island to the south for irrigation proposes.
